In
May 2005, the time had come for me to visit the Outer Hebrides,
the Western isles as the locals say. I had a long-standing wish
to visit these remote islands, with Calanais stone circle high on
the list of priorities. I quickly discovered there was considerably
more to enjoy: the splendid golden beaches that line the western
shores, the restored black houses, the kippers. They are distant
places, almost to the point of being foreign, but I warmly recommend
a visit. The route there took in Glencoe, Mull and Skye mostly in
fine weather, providing many photographic opportunities. Follow

Since
June 2005, visitors to Wales have the freedom to roam the moors,
and explore away from the beaten tracks. This is a golden chance
to discover just how blessed Snowdonia is with its rich variety
of landscapes, from the scars left by extensive mining to the marshy
desolation of upland bogs and the unforgiving rock of its mountains.
All these can be experienced within a few miles of each other, offering
the visitor a wealth of scenery in an average day on the hills.

Iceland
has been on my must-travel list for many years, but it is only
recently that the price of air-fares has fallen and made it
an affordable destination. Tourism is a growing industry, with
visitors travelling from far to marvel at the local natural
wonders, most of which are easily accessible from the main ring
road. It will be interesting to see how long Iceland's fragile
environment and infrastructure will be able to sustain this
influx. The more popular sites are already showing signs of
erosion. Sadly, I know I have added my own tiny contribution
to this process of destruction. I do not see how to protect
these sites without limiting the movements of any future well-meaning
photographers. Let us hope the Icelanders find a solution that
suits everyone, before any irretrievable damage has been inflicted.
