The Pennines are the spine of England, running from Manchester all the way to the Scottish border. They are blessed with several National Parks which offer some protection against the intrusions of modern industry. In this section, I cover the Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales (coming soon!); Northumberland may be found in the next gallery.

It is a fact that more people live within 50 miles of Kinder Scout than Charing Cross. This alone could explain the great popularity of the Peak District. However, this area also possesses a charm all of its own, often quiet and understated. If I had to choose just one part for an outing, I personally would recommend the area around Kinder Scout and Stanage Edge as the most dramatic and interesting. Most of its photographic potential for me comes from the gritstone that abounds in the northern and eastern parts of the National Park. These stones have two essential characteristics: firstly they are eroded (by weather and man alike) into oneiric shapes and secondly they glow in the golden light prevalent at the ends of the day.
